The next step is to collect all the materials needed. If you need to print anything out, now is the best time to do that. In this step, you must gather your paper, cover material, decorative materials, and all the technical things you may need, such as a ruler, pencil, bone folder, cutting mat, craft knife, glue, needle, and thread.

Prepare paper -

If you need to, cut your paper into equal-sized sheets for the pages of your book. Make sure they're all the same size. Some people use guillotines at this point in the process to ensure that all the pages are cut evenly.

Fold pages -

Stack your paper sheets evenly and fold them in half to create the individual pages of your book. Use a bone folder or the back of a spoon to create a crisp fold.

Create signatures -

Divide your folded sheets into smaller groups, called signatures. Typically, each signature consists of four to six folded sheets.

Punch holes -

In this step, you would need to mark evenly spaced holes along the fold of each signature. The number of holes is up to you, but books generally have between four and six. Using a needle or awl, punch holes through the marks on each signature. Be careful to keep all the pages aligned.

Prepare thread -

Cut a length of thread, about three times the height of your book, and thread it through a needle. Double the thread and tie a knot at the end.

Sew signatures -

Starting from the inside of the center signature, sew through the bottom hole, leaving a tail of thread inside the book. Then, sew back through the second hole from the bottom, then out through the third, and so on, until you reach the top hole.

Tie off thread -

When you reach the top hole, sew back into the signature and tie a knot around the thread tail left at the beginning. Then, trim the excess thread.

Repeat for other signatures -

Repeat the sewing process for each signature, making sure to keep the thread tension consistent.

Prepare cover -

Cut two pieces of heavy cardboard for your front and back covers. Make sure they're slightly larger than your pages to allow for overlap. For the book’s spine, you need to cut a strip of cardboard with the same height as your front and back covers, and a width equal to the combined thickness of all your signatures.

Combine cover -

Position your three heavy cardboard pieces on the reverse side of whatever cover material you want to use (leather, cloth, etc.) and be sure to add a little space between them so that they can fold. Glue the cardboard down, measure a border of about one inch (25 mm) all round, and trim the edges.

Finish cover -

Fold the excess edges over the cardboard covers and glue them down. We recommend that you wait for all the glue to dry before continuing to the next step.

Attach covers -

Apply glue along the spine of your signatures. Carefully press them against the spine of your cover, making sure they're aligned and centered. Tip: use clips to hold all your signatures together so that none of them accidentally slip.

Press and dry -

Place your bound book between heavy objects, like books or boards, to press it flat while the glue dries. Let it dry completely.

Add endpapers -

Glue decorative paper to the inside covers of your book to create endpapers. This step is optional but adds a professional touch and hides the cardboard underneath.

Review your work -

Take a moment to admire your creation and make any final adjustments or embellishments. If you want, you can even write or print the title and author of your book on the cover and spine. Be creative!
