‘I'm Still Here’ makes history as first Brazilian film to win Oscar for Best International Feature

Director Walter Salles dedicated the award to Eunice Paiva, as well as actresses Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro

'I'm Still Here,' a Brazilian film set against the backdrop of the military dictatorship, which recounts the true story of a mother of five whose husband disappears, made history by earning Brazil its first Oscar in a major category. 

In his acceptance speech, director Walter Salles dedicated the award to iconic lawyer and activist Eunice Paiva, as well as actresses Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro. "I think it's not a film that has been recognized. It's a culture that's being recognized. It's the way we do cinema in Brazil that is being recognized," Salles told reporters backstage.

Despite its historic win, the film did not take 'Best Picture,' which went to 'Anora.' Fernanda Torres, a favorite in the category, missed out on 'Best Actress.'
