Choosing foods with a low carbon footprint can reduce emissions, but certain foods go a step further by actively removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making a positive impact on the climate.
Food production is a significant driver of climate change, generating around a quarter of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions stem from various activities like fuel burned by farm machinery, fertilizer production, and methane released by livestock. However, some foods, known as "carbon-negative" foods, remove more greenhouse gases than they emit. These remarkable foods not only reduce the carbon impact of our diets but can also help restore ecosystems.
It is no secret that the food we consume has a significant impact on our planet. From agriculture taking up half of all habitable land to the meat and dairy industries accounting for approximately 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, we must change what we eat to reduce our carbon footprint and mitigate the most catastrophic effects of climate change.
By choosing climate-conscious and sustainable foods, we can reduce our carbon footprint. But what is and what is not a climate-conscious food? Check out this gallery to find out more.
