The Armenian genocide was the mass murder of up to one million Armenians during the First World War. Sometimes called the first genocide of the 20th century, the systematic destruction of the Armenian people in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and 1916 was more than just an attempt to irradicate an entire population, it was a brutal endeavor to erase a national identity. But while most historians agree that the events of that period constitute genocide, there are still some who refuse to acknowledge it as such.
