A Japanese government report warns that a magnitude 9 earthquake along the Nankai Trough could result in nearly 300,000 deaths and cause approximately US$1.81 trillion in economic damage, nearly half of Japan's GDP. The Nankai Trough, a 900 km (nearly 560 miles) seismic zone off the Pacific coast, has an 80% chance of experiencing such a quake within the next 100 to 150 years.

Earthquakes, once rare and unpredictable, are becoming increasingly frequent and severe. Scientists have been racing to develop tools to predict these natural disasters, but with limited success. Now, artificial intelligence is offering a glimmer of hope. By analyzing vast amounts of data, AI is helping scientists identify patterns that could signal an impending quake.

But can this technology finally provide the answers we've been seeking? Click on to find out.
