Who are the first climate change refugees in the Americas?
A sinking island has displaced an entire community

In June 2024, the population of an entire island off the coast of Panama was evacuated due to rising sea levels. Its residents, the indigenous Guna people, became Latin America's first climate refugees. And while the islanders were successfully relocated to the mainland, scientists have warned that many other islands in the region are set to disappear underwater by 2050. But who exactly are the Guna, and where did they end up?
